Abstract

The so-called zeta potential can be determined through electrokinetic measurements, and indicates the status regarding surface charges along the interface between solids and liquids. Information about a surface charge gives us information about the condition, quality and characteristics of a macroscopic surface in the polar medium. This article reviews the principle of zeta potential of solids based on streaming current and streaming-potential measurements and introduces a novel instrumentation. The primary objective of this paper is to describe the theoretical basis of zeta potential and to demonstrate the use of the new analyzer for flat solid surfaces.
