Abstract

From both an ontological and historical standpoint, this study explores the meaning of the term "model". In the salons of 19th century Paris, there was a dispute over the interpretation of the term "model" in the fashion world. The progression of the fashion sector, pioneered by Charles Frederick Worth, is expected to give rise to new fashion terminology, such as the term "mannequin". The article will analyze the new network of meanings that have formed around this phrase and attempt to understand its historical sequence and rationale via social, philosophical, commercial, and fashion connections. The discussion will center on women, particularly models, their bodies, self-perception, autonomy, and contrasting concepts like subject-object, living-non-living, and real-unreal. Maison Martin Margiela's work serves as a testament to the relevance of this theme in the current design industry.
