Abstract

The paper deals with some of more important development characteristics and achievements in the field of the sewing technology and sewing machines over the previous period of one and a half decade. The development of this very demanding technological discipline in the process of clothing manufacturing is surveyed. Although the development cycles are gradual, it is interesting to emphasize that flexibility, modular concept, operation control, automation of production functions, sewing process surveillance, ease of maintenance and servicing are the basis for these developments. The paper describes the technology and importance of the direct drive of the sewing machine, lubrication-free technology, networking of sewing machines and the application of nanotechnology in machine components. The analysis of the contribution of the leading world manufacturers who showcased their sewing machines and devices at the IMB Cologne 2006. is given.
