Abstract

The paper describes the development of the textile industry of the city of Varaždin since the 15th century up to date. The centuries-old tradition of sericulture, from the manufacture of raw silk in 17th century, and since 1929 in the enterprise Varaždinska industrija svile d.d., and afterwards in the company VIS, is described. The wool production started in the former company Tivar, and afterwards in the company Varteks, where about 10 000 workers were employed in the eighties. All this confirms that the textile industry has been of great importance for Varaždin and its region. A contribution to better understanding of this industry can be an inspiration for the present generation of textile experts, and last but not least it may be noted which incentives were responsible for this development.
